Dear Friends,

Welcome to the homepage of the Millersville University Chapter of the American Meteorological Society!  MU-AMS is one of the largest student-run organizations at Millersville University, and serves as an academic bridge between the undergraduate sciences and the professional fields within the Earth Sciences.  Of paramount concern to our society is the dissemination of meteorological knowledge through education and community outreach, which allows us to bridge the gap between students, educators, and the general public.

With the continued support and growth of our Earth Sciences Department, the Meteorology program at MU has become a superior learning environment for undergraduate students around the nation.  One of the most stunning successes of late has been the tremendous fall in attrition rates within the program, which we feel is in part due to the continued success of our Met-Mentor program.  Pairing incoming freshmen with experienced upperclassmen allows new students to become familiar with our department and feel comfortable in their new surroundings.

The committee system instilled in 2006 has been a monumental success, and contributed significantly to MU-AMS being named Student Chapter of the Year by the National American Meteorological Society for the 2006-2007 school year.  Membership and involvement are at all-time highs, and our society has become much more organized over the past three years.  Additionally, the advent of “Open Officer Meetings” in 2007 has allowed every interested student to get heavily involved with the inner-workings of a large student-run organization.

MU-AMS: 2007 AMS Local Chapter of the Year

Our speaker series has also been a great success, attracting some of the most influential and successful national figures in the field of meteorology.  The prospect of hearing such successful and hard-working individuals speak not only excites our members, but also shows them what they can achieve after pursuing a degree in the atmospheric sciences.  We will once again send all seniors to the National AMS Conference in January 2009, located in Phoenix, Arizona.  This event will highlight the four year commitment our seniors have made to their degrees in meteorology, and our presence at other regional meetings will help solidify the up-and-coming careers of our younger students.

Last but certainly not least, the MU-AMS community outreach program has become the cornerstone of our organization, leading to consistently high numbers of people who benefit from our involvement with their weather-related activities.  Millersville students continue to travel to schools across Lancaster County in an effort to share their knowledge of the atmosphere with school-aged children and to help recruit young minds into all areas of science.

Of course, 2008-2009 will feature our annual Russell L. DeSouza Banquet, many social events, and an increasing number of community service events.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns, as we are open to all suggestions.  All of Millersville meteorology welcomes you and looks forward to working with you to benefit the advancement of science.

Sincerely,
Signature

President, MU-AMS
