Dear Friends,

Welcome to the home of the Millersville chapter of the American Meteorological Society! As one of the largest organizations on campus, MU-AMS serves our scientific community by connecting our members with each other and their future, whether it be continuing in academia, working in the public or private sectors or pursuing a number of other options that may come their way. Our chapter’s focus is to prepare you for your career in meteorology, and to better know your peers.

With the continued support of the Earth Sciences department, we will continue to expand both in membership and outreach this year. The Met-Mentor program will continue its success this year to welcome our freshmen meteorology majors and make them feel comfortable and at home here at Millersville. Each freshman will be assigned a responsible and experienced upperclassman to give them a helping hand in getting started.

Internally, our organization will continue to strengthen with our open officers meetings, allowing any engaged member of MU-AMS to sit in on our officer meetings and offer insight. Our newly condensed committees (Events/Fundraising and Community Outreach) will give our members more opportunities to volunteer for events and have a bigger part in planning of our activities.

MU-AMS: 2007 AMS Local Chapter of the Year

Our exciting speaker series will include speakers from the private industry, including forensic meteorology, aviation and other business-weather related topics. We will also host those involved in public entities. Our goal is to provide you with a wide range of speakers that will hopefully open your eyes to what you really want to do with your career.

Public Weather Awareness Day was an overwhelming success in 2009, and we will be back and better than ever is 2010. In addition, our community outreach to local schools will continue to grow as much as we can to spread our passion for weather with school children.

Among other events, we will be increasing the number of social events by popular demand. We will also end the year, as always, with the Russell L. DeSouza Banquet.

As your President, I want you to know that this organization is yours. Have an idea for a speaker? Bring it up at an Open Officer’s meeting. Think we could do a better job? Shoot me an email. I love hearing what you have to say, because it makes us better as an organization.

Sincerely,
